Steering angle sensor. Easy replacement. But dealer will charge you a few grand to fix. Replace the sensor, and then need to code it. You can buy a DCAN cable and use tool32 (download online for free).
it’s safe to drive, but you have no traction control, abs, self-cancelling indicators or hill-start.

The official BMW name of the typical BMW noise is the gong.
![]() 05/30/2018 at 08:15 |

My dad calls it the $1000 gong, because when you hear it you usually need to spend at least $1000 to make it go away.

Neat, now you can do brake-stands!
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

It’s the Bat Signal of BMW service departments. Your money is urgently needed.

Except when you live somewhere cold and it gongs at you every time the temp is 37°F or less. Maybe now that I’m in DC instead of WI it won’t be gonging at me quite so much.

That’s all I had for easy fixes. Now youtube how to replace the damn sensor causing the issue and get wrenching
Alternatively, have a mechanic/dealer work on it.
Alternatively still, drive car off the cliff. Tell cops it was stolen. Collect insurance money. Go to jail for insurance fraud. Serve sentence. Come out. Buy a different car.
Last alternative - sell current car, buy different car. Avoid jail.

Cheapest would be to leave it as is. I’m being pedantic. Good luck with repairs. Let us know how long it took and how many knuckles you scraped
